Editorial Policy
How we ensure our content is accurate, independent, and trustworthy.
Home Heat Pump Guide is committed to providing accurate, unbiased, and verifiable information. Our editorial content is independent of our commercial relationships. We show our working, cite our sources, and tell you when a heat pump might not be right — something most industry-funded sites never do.
Independence
Our editorial content is produced independently. No installer, manufacturer, trade body, or commercial partner has any input into what we write, the figures we publish, or the advice we give. This independence is non-negotiable and is the foundation of our credibility.
Specifically:
- We do not accept payment for editorial content
- We do not publish sponsored articles, advertorials, or paid placements
- We do not give preferential coverage to any installer, manufacturer, or brand
- Our commercial team (which manages the quote service) is separate from our editorial team
- Commercial relationships never influence editorial decisions
Accuracy
We take accuracy seriously. Every factual claim on our site is based on data from recognised, authoritative sources. Our primary data sources are:
- Ofgem — energy prices and regulatory data
- Energy Saving Trust — home energy data and guidance
- MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) — installation data and quality standards
- BEIS / DESNZ — government energy and climate data
- BRE (Building Research Establishment) — housing stock data
Every calculation on our site includes a methodology note explaining the data sources and assumptions used. We publish our full methodology and formulas so that anyone can verify our figures independently.
Transparency
Transparency means showing our working, not just our conclusions. We practise transparency in several ways:
- Methodology notes: Every significant calculation includes an expandable note explaining how we arrived at the figure, what data we used, and what assumptions we made.
- Published assumptions: Our full set of assumptions (energy prices, efficiency figures, cost ranges) is published on our methodology page.
- Formula disclosure: Every formula we use in our calculations is published on our calculation guide.
- Commercial disclosure: We are transparent about how we make money (referral fees from our quote service) and how this does and does not affect our content.
- Update dates: We state when content was last reviewed and updated.
Balanced Coverage
We are advocates for accurate information, not for heat pumps. While we believe heat pumps are an excellent choice for many UK homes, we are equally committed to explaining when they are not the best option. Every guide on our site includes a section on limitations, disadvantages, or situations where other options may be better.
We do not:
- Cherry-pick data to make heat pumps look better than they are
- Use best-case laboratory figures instead of real-world averages
- Hide additional costs or potential complications
- Dismiss legitimate concerns about heat pumps
- Pressure homeowners to proceed with an installation
Update Frequency
Keeping information current is essential for a site about costs and regulations. Our update schedule:
- Energy prices: Updated quarterly, within one week of each Ofgem price cap announcement
- Installation costs: Reviewed monthly based on MCS data and installer surveys
- Grant information: Updated whenever the government announces changes to the BUS grant or other schemes
- Regulations: Updated as policy changes are announced
- All content: Full editorial review at least quarterly

If we make an error, we want to know about it and we will correct it. Our corrections policy:
- Significant factual errors are corrected within 24 hours of discovery
- A correction notice is added to the top of the affected page
- Minor errors (typos, rounding differences) are corrected without notice
- If an error has been present for a significant period, we will note when it was introduced and corrected
If you spot an error on our site, please contact us. We appreciate corrections and will credit them if you wish.
